How to further your career graduates 2020

It’s been a rough year all round but for the graduating class of 2020 it’s been a cliff-hanger. What to do now? There’s no doubt that recruitment has suffered during the pandemic and the younger workforce has been the most effected.

According to a study from the Resolution Foundation “One-third of 18-24-year-old employees (excluding students) have lost jobs or been furloughed, compared to one-in-six prime-age adults” so with less roles for the newly graduated what can they do?

Find an Entry-Level Role

Although competition will be tough, due to the limited number of salaried jobs, there are still some roles out there. Take a look at these graduate marketing jobs.

If you can’t find a job that’s right for you be ahead of the rest by setting up a job alert to make sure you’re the first to hear about a relevant role as soon as it’s posted.

Skill Yourself

If you can’t immediately find a career in digital marketing you may have to find another job in the meantime but this doesn’t mean that you should put your marketing aspirations on hold. Instead think about adding to your skill set. Digital marketing has become more important than ever so why not sign up to Google’s free course, Fundamentals of digital marketing.

Apply for an Internship

A few years back internships were a luxury for those who didn’t need a salary to survive. However, now most companies pay for your work experience Gaining work experience within the field you want to work in is invaluable, not only can it help you to develop your skills, use your ‘learned’ knowledge in a real-life setting and discover what industry or marketing discipline you want to work in. You can look for internships online, has their own site to search.

However, not all jobs are posted online, sometimes it’s best to register your interests with a recruitment agency who specialise in placing graduates. Inspiring Interns is one of these agencies.

Do a Masters

Having recently graduated the idea of going back to university and adding onto your student loan might not be viable for you for you. However, completing a MSc in marketing or digital marketing could help to keep you on the marketing-track whist gaining more knowledge. There are also some courses that are 100% online such as The Online Marketing MSc with Adam Smith Business School and the University of Glasgow. With start dates in January, April and September there’s still time to sign up and for either part time or full time courses.
